Introduction

Interracial marriage has been popular in Taiwan these days; foreign bridegrooms and brides are everywhere we go. Our group members are curious about this phenomenon, so we decide to do some research, hoping to find out why interracial marriages increase year over year. We analyze various factors that cause Taiwanese men resort to neighbouring countries for their better half instead of marrying women with the same nationality.

Also, we divide foreign brides into two major groups
Southeast Asia brides and Mainland China brides. We go further to study the problems that may exist in their marriage with Taiwanese men, such as how these interracial couples convey their feelings in different languages, how they get with different local and social customs, and how these foreign spouses cope with discriminations from the locals, etc.

In addition, the group will look briefly into the marriages between Taiwanese women and the Westernersis it because these Taiwanese women worship everything, including husband, foreign, that they prefer to marry Europeans or Americans? Potential problems that may emerge from cross-cultural marriages because of culture shock and dissimilar lifestyles will also be stated in this project. We hope this project will give readers better understandings about this new pattern of marriage.

Why Interracial Marriage?

More and more Taiwanese men reach the age of marriage but cannot find spouse in Taiwan, they consider cross-cultural marriage. Generally, their social status is lower than the average. Most of them don’t receive decent education, so they usually cannot find a well-paid job to make their living. Therefore, they often have difficulties getting their lifelong companions, unless they try marriage agency.

Some men seek for foreign brides partly is because that they don’t want to go through the whole process of courtship. Being tired of playing love games with women, they speed up the slow procedure of courting, and transformed it into a drive-through
browsing through thousands of women’s pictures, order one that they feel pleased with, pay the agency money, and then drive away with their “meal.” The sacred marriage has changed into a commodity of export and import: Southeast Asia women exports to Taiwan.

To go deeper, we find that most of these men are actually looking for someone who can bear them children, earn money to support their family, and most of all, they want a young, beautiful, and docile woman who can take good care of them, an all year round nurse or maid, and not an expensive one. In other words, what they want is a wife at their commands, a multifunctional machine that can satisfy all their needs. Local women naturally were eliminated on these men’s lists, because few young local women will want to marry an old man with nothing, these men know that, so they turn round and embrace brides from Vietnam, Philippines, Cambodia, Thailand, Indonesia, and Mainland China.

Taiwanese men marry foreign brides for their own reasons, and vice versa. Foreign brides also take advantage of their coupling with Taiwanese men. Marrying Taiwanese men brings these foreign women certain amount of financial wealth and they can send money back to their hometown to improve their family’s economic situation. That is to say, both sides get married not purely because of love, but for many other considerations. This not only distorts the true meanings of marriage, but also destroys the relationships between males and females. Taiwanese men looking for foreign wives only because foreign wives are easier to be tamed; foreign females marry men in
Taiwan because that ensures them a relatively better life.

This current model of marriage greatly influences Taiwanese women. Statistics show that there are more and more highly-educated men choose to marry foreign brides, so Taiwanese women find it harder to find men of a better social background as their husbands. And it creates many social problems that will possibly affect the whole society in some ways.

Here is a clip of Taiwan’s presidential candidate’s remark about China brides.

His speech provoked many China brides. They protested against his racial discrimination of their marriages with Taiwanese men. They said that some interracial couples get married because they love, cherish, and want to spend the rest of their life with each other. He shouldn’t price their marriage, and even claimed that they are “cheap.” This clip reflects that most Taiwanese people look down on interracial couples, especially the China-Taiwan couples, because many people still regard China brides as enemies. Well, we hope this video can change your viewpoint of these foreign brides. We have to show our respect to them, for they have to suffer others’ judgmental eyes and uneasily acclimatize themselves to life in Taiwan, it is not an easy job.

Assunptions about mixed blood children

Mixed Blood Stars
Like what we say before, more and more Taiwanese women dream of marrying to white husbands for having children who will inherit their fathers’ good looking like pointed nose, blue eyes, and blond hairs. It seems, as far as most people concerned, amerasian (half American blood and half Asian blood) is very popular in the world. However, mixed blood people are concerned as monster. That’s because people think a women who marries to a foreigner is kind of treacherous behavior. In the past time, when transportation was not so convenient than nowadays, people think going abroad is equal to turn one’s back on his/her country. Needless to say, when a woman comes back to her own country with a blue eye and blond hair child; therefore, mixed blood people have been looked down in the past time.
Nevertheless, with the time goes by, mixed blood people have turned out to be everyone’s dream. Modern people’s changes of aesthetics totally convert the distain into adoration. Here are some statements of mixed blood people which we consider that they are true; or, saying it more specifically which we consider that they are true but sometimes they are just our prejudices of mixed blood people.
(1) Is that mixed blood person is more pretty or handsome than others who just have simplex blood?
There have been a statistics reviled that most people consider that mixed blood childe is more pretty or handsome than other simple blood child no matter in all white or all yellow child. And I think may be the data is not so reasonable; but look mixed blood child around us. Don’t we think they are more pretty and cute than other yellow children in modern aesthetics? The answer is “yes.” Our aesthetics is a major control our feeling of mixed blood childe.
(2) Is that mixed blood person is more than simple blood childe?
Obviously the answer will be “no.” the control of smart or not is in our genes. And people’ genes all around the world are equal without any difference of different races. So we may say gene may be a key of cleverness but not race. These two questions are our major concerns when we talk about mixed blood children. In fact, there is a theory says that one day all human races in the world will turn out to be black because black people’s genes are stronger and more aggressive than other colors people. If blacks and whites get married, then their children will be black. If a yellow get married to a black, then their children will be black. Gradually, the color of human will turn out to be all black. Some people believe in the theory sincerely; some people do not. All of these are people’s assumptions, conjectures and researches on mixed blood children. Believe it or not, it’s all your options.

Couture Clash

Pointed nose,” “blue eyes,” “blond hairs,” and “handsome look” are classical impressions of handsome white men and which are dream husband types of orient women. In recent years, especially in Taiwan, women dream to married to a white husband; what’s more, some Taiwanese women “just” want to get married with a white husband which means as to a yellow husband is not their option at all. Is that phenomenon what say “xenomania,” a word deriving from Greek "xe`nos" means foreign, strange and English mania means strong and unreasonable desire. They are group of women who have strong and foreign of white men.

According to an investigation, The number of interracial marriages in the United States has been on the rise. In 1980, there were 651,000, representing 1.3% of all marriages; in 1992, there were 1,161,000, representing 2.2% of all marriages. From these statistics we can realize how flourish interracial marriage is. Why so many Taiwanese women want to marry to white men. Some women say that they dream of marrying to white men because they want to have babies with pretty face like his/her father. Some women say they married to white husbands will make her feel honorable because other women will be envious of her marriage to handsome men. Still some women want to get married with white men just because they want their husbands are handsome as a movie starts. However, sometimes they forget some cultural clash between them for they have already been “colorblind in love.”

Here are three major cultural clashes in interracial marriage below:
(1) Different language:
What I mean “different language” is not really mean the couples of interracial marriage totally don’t know their wives/husbands speeches, for if they get married, they probably know their spouses’ language more and less. But sometime misunderstanding results from their different couture of different speech style. After all English is our second language. May Taiwanese women sometime can’t get the point of their white husbands’ jokes or speeches.
(2) Different tastes of food
Although people get used to western food quickly for some foreign food has been imported to Taiwan these years, some stereotyped habits can’t change in one or two day. Take rice for example. Chinese people can eat salad or bread for three day, but when it comes to the forth day, most Chinese people can’t stand it anymore because rice is their major food not bread although they all made of flour.
(3) Different life style
Like foreigners get used to take bath in the morning which gives them energy for whole day; however Taiwanese get used to take bathe in the evening which they think it will wash their fatigue away in whole day. Or foreigners
(4) Different religion:
Most foreigners are Christians; however, most Chinese are Buddhists. How to take balance between two different religions may be a bid problem between interracial couples.
There are still many different kind of differences in interracial marriage waiting for those interracial couple to solve. To sum up, what I am trying to say is that in the trend of interracial marriage women who want to marry to white husbands must think twice of what problems will be there after they getting married. Solve them first, then they can have happy interracial marriage.

The Acculturation of Foreign Spouses (Ⅰ)

Nowadays, the foreign spouses live in Taiwan is a common phenomenon and according to data provided by PTS, there are more than 390,000 foreign brides in Taiwan; a third are from Vietnam, Indonesia , the Philippines or Thailand and the other two-thirds are from China. Of all the problems the Southeast Asian spouses face in Taiwan, the most important one they have to overcome is the culture gaps, including the languages and the customs. "Some foreign spouses work as caregivers for the elderly and infirm. (Photo by Chang Su-ching)" The picture on the left is from "The Biggest Leap" in Taiwan Review.

As the foreign brides get married to Taiwanese husbands, they have to learn Chinese and Taiwanese. "The greatest difficulties a foreign spouse might have are the language barrier and adapting to the way of life," says Ke, one of the foreign spouses. It is true that sometimes they have difficulty communicating with their parents-in-law, who are the olds and mostly speaking Taiwanese. In the husband's side, they usually leave home and go to work, so their foreign spouses take charge of the house chores. And if husband's parents are at home, the foreign spouses take care of them too. However, the parents-in-law are not always satisfied with their foreign daughter-in-law. The misunderstanding between them causes from the language barrier; the elders are not easily understood by their daughter-in-law and aren't able to comprehend their poor Chinese. In my personal experience, I have once overheard an old woman complaining to her friends about her daughter-in-law who came from Indonesia, “Every time when I talked to my daughter-in-law, she just nodded her head as if she understood, but later I found she didn’t realize my words. Ah! What an annoyance!”

Besides, the custom is another problem between the foreign marriages. In Philippine, people do not eat rice porridge as a meal only when they deal with the funeral affairs. But here in Taiwan, cooking porridge is as usual as can be. Therefore, this misunderstanding always occurs when Taiwanese families are unaware of the custom of Philippine. As for Thai, they believe each person has an angel above his/her head, so it's really impolite to touch one's head, especially the children's heads. They regard this behavior as an insult. Moreover, they do not shake hands or leave the tips with the left hands for they think left hands are unclean. However, people in Taiwan are easily to touch a child's head due to the seduction of his/her adorable cute face. Hence, it irritates the foreign mother unknowingly. Another example in Indonesia is their belief. Since most of them are Muslim, they do not eat pork, and they obey the Koran, leading a religious life. But some Taiwanese families don't have such a rule, so the foreign spouses adjust themselves to the lifestyle here as well as sustain their religion.

Since there are two-thirds foreign spouses from China, I will introduce you the problems they encounter in the following essay.

The Acculturation of Foreign Spouses (Ⅱ)

In Taiwan, actually there are lots of Cross-strait marriages. Since the relationships are not instable between Taiwan and China, it makes the mainland spouses feel uncertainty of their identification. Also, the discrimination still exists in Taiwan society. These problems mainland spouses face are not easy to get rid off, what’s worse, it even affects their jobs, relationships, and their social commerce.

Actually, just like the foreign spouses, mainland spouses also have to face the difference of languages, but the main problem is the accent between Taiwan and China. People are sensitive with other’s speaking accent; therefore, it may be easy to tell one if he/she is from other countries. And here, if one woman is known that she is from China and marry to Taiwan’s husband, she may get the discrimination eyes from others. Stereotype is one of the reasons; many people may link mainland spouses with human smuggling syndicate, and those Chinese women come to Taiwan cheating for money. They are increasingly associated with prostitution and bogus marriage. The people watch this kind of news on TV and unfortunately the impression roots in their minds. Little by little, this stereotype causes the discrimination.

Once this discrimination has built, China spouses in Taiwan begin their hard days. It may be inconvenient when they are finding a job and communicating with others. What’s worse, it may obstruct them from learning new things. Hence, their social range is narrowed down. Fortunately, the government is helping them for getting a job and also teaching them Taiwanese. The most important part is to make them realize the Taiwan culture. Actually, many China spouses are working hard to get accustomed to Taiwan’s culture.

Although foreign marriage is a blissful memory in some people’s lives, it still generates some problems later, like domestic violence. Due to the barrier in the languages, it leads to some misunderstandings in foreign marriage. The husband and the wife have unfair standards in the family. The husband tends to charge everything, especially money, so the standard of the wife is lower than her husband. If the husband has hot temper and unfortunately is addicted to alcohol, he may have higher rate to commit domestic violence. Therefore, the foreign spouses should find law to shield themselves, otherwise, they become helpless.
